Thousands of fish died suddenly died in the Petanang River, Soak Baru Village, Sekayu District, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. Residents have known about the fish’s death since Friday, July 24, 2020.
Until now, rotting fish are still found in the river flow. As a result, a pungent odor spread at the location.
“Since last Friday we have found a lot of dead fish,” said Samsurizal, owner of fish farming in the Petanang River.
So far, he has been cultivating fish by utilizing the river flow. As a result of this sudden death with the number reaching thousands of heads, he admitted that he suffered losses of up to tens of millions of rupiah.
Temporary allegations that the cause of the death of thousands of fish was due to a river that was contaminated with poisonous substances. “We suspect that someone deliberately poisoned with the putas,” he said.
The Head of Soak Baru Urban Village, Bastari, admitted that the river is polluted and gives off a bad smell. “Apart from the rotten smell of fish carcasses, the water is also very dirty and unsuitable for consumption,” he said.
He has carried out direct checks in the field with officers from the Fisheries Service of Musi Banyuasin Regency. “From the results of temporary checks, found dead fish whose characteristics were due to poisoning,” he added, as quoted by Sindonews.
