Fish Kill Alert

A flagrant by residents recorded the death of hundreds of fish in the Teles Pires River, in Sinop, in the north of the state, over the weekend. The fish were floating in an area close to the dam of the Sinop Hydroelectric Plant (UHE).

In a note, the State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema) informed that UHE Sinop communicated to the agency that is monitoring the case to investigate what happened.

The power company of Sinop, the plant’s concessionaire, said that, due to the drought period, the reservoir had reduced water level, reaching the limit and, therefore, it would have been necessary to stop the power generating units. As a consequence, fish deaths occurred.

The company also said it had assigned teams to collect the carcasses and correctly dispose of them.

This procedure is part of the operation of the hydroelectric plant and is provided for in environmental licensing.
