Thousands of dead fish wash up on a lake in Southern Russia

Fish Kill Alert

A fortnight after the massive death of marine animals in Kamchatka, thousands of rotting fish have been discovered on the shores of a lake in southern Russia. The authorities are checking the situation.

Residents of Kalmykia, a republic within Russia located in the south of the country, reported on social networks on Saturday the presence of several tonnes of dead fish on the shores of the Archan-Zelmen reservoir.

By commenting on their videos, residents describe an unbearable odor that emanates from the decomposing corpses and that spreads around the body of water. The footage shows entire shores covered with dead fish.

Inspectors from the Investigative Committee, the main investigative body of the Russian Federation, have started verifications, the institution said in a statement on Sunday.

Ecologists and environmental protection specialists are working on site, but no specific reason for this massive fish death has yet been established.

This dire situation is attracting all the more attention since at the beginning of the month, other aquatic animals suffered a similar fate on several beaches in Kamchatka , in the Russian Far East. Surfers have notably testified to a change in the color of the water, complaining of having swollen eyes and irritated skin after their sport.
