Key characteristics of the Eastern New Guinea Region:

  • Location:Situated in the northeast of the New Guinea island, including the Bismarck Archipelago and north-eastern parts of the Solomon Islands Archipelago. 
  • Population:The least populous region, with an estimated 1,096,000 people in 2011, representing 15% of PNG’s total population. 
  • Distinctiveness:Characterized by its unique prehistory and history, evident in the prevalence of Austronesian languages and archaeological findings of Lapita pottery culture. 
  • Geographic features:Includes diverse island landscapes, including the Bismarck Archipelago (New Britain, New Ireland, and other islands) and parts of the Solomon Islands Archipelago. 

The other three regions of Papua New Guinea are:

  • Southern Region: This region encompasses the southern part of the main New Guinea island.
  • Highlands Region: Characterized by the mountainous central part of New Guinea.
  • Momase Region: This region is a more recent addition, encompassing the western part of the mainland and some offshore islands.
