Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Depth 10 km Strikes Mid-Indian Ridge on 7th June 2025

Key Features and Characteristics:

Location:
It’s located in the Indian Ocean, extending north from the South Atlantic.

Structure:
It’s a mid-ocean ridge, a chain of underwater mountains formed by the separation of tectonic plates.

Formation:
The Mid-Indian Ridge is a divergent boundary, where tectonic plates move apart, allowing magma to rise and cool, creating new crust.

Impact on Plate Tectonics:
Its existence supports the theory of continental drift and plate tectonics, where Earth’s crust is divided into large plates that move and interact.

Two Branches:
It divides into two segments near Rodrigues Island: one northward towards the Gulf of Aden and the other southeast towards the Macquarie Ridge.

Central Indian Ridge:
The central section of the Mid-Indian Ridge is known as the Central Indian Ridge.

Activity:
The Mid-Indian Ridge is associated with earthquake activity, though it is considered a relatively slow spreading ridge.
