The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean region. It shares the island with Haiti, which occupies the western third. The country is the second largest in the Caribbean by area and population, after Cuba and Haiti respectively.
