Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Depth 40 km Strikes Babuyan Islands Region, Philippines on 20th July 2025

The islands are known for their volcanic origins and coral reefs.

Calayan is the largest island and the only port, while Camiguin boasts the longest coastline.

The Babuyan Marine Corridor around the islands is a critical breeding and wintering ground for humpback whales (part of the endangered Western North Pacific DPS) and other marine life, according to the Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force.

The islands are home to the Ibatan people, officially recognized as an indigenous cultural community.

The islands are relatively remote, with access primarily by boat from mainland Luzon, and are susceptible to harsh weather conditions that can disrupt travel.
