Crimea is a peninsula on the Black Sea, internationally recognized as part of Ukraine but under Russian occupation since Russia’s illegal annexation in 2014, following a contested referendum. Historically transferred from Russia to Ukraine within the Soviet Union in 1954, it became a major flashpoint after Russia’s 2014 invasion, used as a military staging ground and central to the current conflict, with Ukraine vowing to retake it and Russia claiming it as its own.
