Nias is a large, culturally distinct island off the west coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia, known for its world-class surfing, preserved megalithic culture, and traditional, towering architecture. The island population, exceeding 946,000, is split into four regencies and a city, with surfing concentrated in the south (Sorake Bay) and unique, ancient villages in the interior.
