Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake Depth 10 km Strikes Balleny Islands Region on 21st April 2026

The islands are located in the Southern Ocean, north of the Antarctic mainland, and span a latitude range of 66°15’S to 67°35’S and a longitude range of 162°30’E to 165°00’E.

The islands are characterized by glacial landscapes and volcanic origins, with glaciers extending from their slopes into the sea.

The group consists of three main islands (Young, Buckle, and Sturge) and several smaller islets and rocks.

The islands are home to significant colonies of penguins, including Adélie and Chinstrap penguins.

The area is also a breeding and resting ground for seabirds and seals, and is a rich feeding ground for various whales, including Humpback, fin, and minke whales.

The islands are administered under the Antarctic Treaty System, a multi-national framework for the governance of Antarctica.

New Zealand claims the islands as part of the Ross Dependency.

1998 Earthquake: The area was affected by a significant magnitude 8.1 earthquake in 1998, which was the largest ever detected within the Southern Ocean.
