About 23 dolphins dead were found on the beaches of Santa Teresita, Mar de Ajó and La Lucila, among other small summer locations on the Argentine Atlantic coast about 350 km south of Buenos Aires.
Sergio Morón biologist, marine world Foundation told the TN television channel that “die every year on these shores between 500 and 800 copies. But 23 findings at one time is above average. It is a striking fact. It happens to be the most threatened species”.
The specialist said that these dolphins inhabit between Brazil and the extreme south of Argentina and “the Dolphin population is estimated at 40,000, but the number of mortality is very large”.
On the cause of the death of dolphins Moron explained that “there are different hypothesis, there is no one who can define” and said that it is something that “reaches much puppies and young people, which are 80% that we find. Get away from the mothers can be a cause.”
He also noted that “there are adults who die to be caught near the beach. It happens that the bodies found are in very poor condition, they come from decomposition of three or four days in the water”.
About that he told the newspaper La Nación “in several of them there are marks on the skin that may be related to fishing nets” and explained that they are mammals that get caught not can get to the surface to breathe and die.
Sea World is responsible for the rehabilitation of animals found alive. Moron said that so far the year 33 dead dolphins have been found already.
Finally the biologist explained that since the Foundation “try to obtain as much data with bodies and expand knowledge. A necropsy is done and accomplished information about biological conditions of a species in danger of disappearing”.
