A plume of contamination in the Conewago Creek was estimated to have entered the Susquehanna River on Saturday morning, according to a news release from the state Department of Environmental Protection on Saturday afternoon.
Contaminants entered the creek from a fire at a Hanover-area fertilizer plant on Monday.
“No discoloration or impacts to the Conewago have been observed where it enters the Susquehanna,” the news release states.
However, the impact to the Conewago Creek is still visible in the Dover and East Berlin areas, the agency said.
Here are some other points the agency made this afternoon:
— People should not swim, boat or fish in the Conewago Creek while it remains discolored. Samples will be taken when the discoloration disappears to take see whether the creek is safe to enter.
— The water in Slagle Run is clear, and no additional runoff from Miller Chemical is entering it.
— “Public drinking water supplies in the area were not contaminated,” it states.
— New Oxford Municipal Water Authority is not pulling water from the Conewago Creek. The York Water Company and other outside sources are helping to supply water to the authority.
— Wrightsville, which draws water from the river, stopped its pumps at 4:15 a.m. today as a precaution.
— Lancaster, which also draws water from the river, has reported no significant changes in its water samples in the past 24 hours.
