At least 48 children under five died of pneumonia in Peru, between May and June 2016, especially in poor areas exposed to low temperatures during the winter – according to a Government report.
According to the Peruvian Ministry of health (Minsa), during this period, were recorded 7,569 cases of pneumonia in children under five, with 48 deaths. Most occurred in the departments of Cuzco, Junín, Huancavelica, Ayacucho and Puno, in the Centre and in the Andean country’s South.
In those regions, with territories located above 4,000 meters of altitude, the temperature reaches 18 degrees below zero in winter, with ice deposited on surfaces.
Some high-Andean sector and jungles of Peru, with a population mostly poor, will face strong cold waves until August, affecting people and their productive activities and require the Government to develop protection plans.
To combat such damage, Minsa sent to 14 modules regions affected by the cold to support the work of health centres. In addition, were distributed more than one million vaccines against influenza and pneumonia.
According to the latest damage assessment of the National Institute of Civil Defense (into Indeci), 311,655 people of 14 regions have had health problems due to low temperatures.
In may, the Peruvian Government declared an emergency for a period of 60 days in 14 regions of the country because of the sudden drop in temperature in the Andes.
