Experts say this year’s Atlantic hurricane season is likely to be the most active since 2012, with as many as four “major” hurricanes predicted to develop.
Hurricane season, which starts today and ends Nov. 30, is expected to be “near-normal,” the middle of three categories based on total number, strength and duration of the predicted storms used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center.
But “near-normal” likely means more storms than in 2013, 2014 and 2015, which were weak hurricane seasons, according to Gerry Bell, the lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at the Climate Prediction Center. The last predicted “above-normal” hurricane season was 2012, the year Sandy hit.
