Lightning Strikes One World Trade Center, USA

Lightning strike

New Yorkers were treated to a spectacular light show when lightning struck the top of One World Trade Center during a thunderstorm.

Dramatic footage of the electrical strike on America’s tallest building was captured by Anthony Quintano.

Torrential rain closed some roads after flash flooding and caused a number of power cuts.

There was also disruption to flights into Newark Liberty International, Kennedy International and La Guardia Airports.

One World Trade Center, which stands at 1,776ft in a nod to the year the US gained independence, dominates the New York City skyline.

The public also now have access to the 104-storey building’s observatory, which provides a bird’s eye view of the city and its surroundings from more than 1,250ft (381 metres).

Admission is free for relatives of those who died on 9/11 and those who worked in the rescue and recovery missions at Ground Zero.

Officials expect about four million visitors a year.
