A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck Austria late on 23rd July 2026 at 23:59 UTC, shaking communities across the Steiermark and Niederösterreich regions. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 5 km, making the tremor widely felt across the eastern Alps and neighbouring countries.
According to early reports, the epicentre was located near the Semmering region, roughly 12 km east‑northeast of Mürzzuschlag and 9 km southwest of Gloggnitz. The shallow depth amplified the shaking, with residents describing a sudden jolt, loud rumbling, and vibrating furniture.
Witnesses reported feeling the earthquake from Graz to Vienna, with some residents awakened by the abrupt shock shortly before midnight. The tremor was also felt in Hungary, Slovakia, and Croatia, highlighting the broad reach of shallow Alpine seismic events.
More than 800 felt reports were submitted to Austrian authorities, with many describing a “knall” (bang) or “grollen” (ground rumble) just before the shaking.
Early assessments indicate minor structural damage in the immediate Semmering region, including cracks in walls, loosened plaster, and small rockfalls along steep slopes. A small steinschlag (rockfall) was cleared between Schottwien and Breitenstein.
No major injuries or significant infrastructure damage have been reported so far.
Seismologists have already detected several aftershocks, including one of magnitude 2.1 near Gloggnitz early on 24th July. Experts expect 10–20 measurable aftershocks over the next two weeks, with one or two likely to be felt by residents.
The quake occurred along the Mur–Mürz Fault Zone, one of Austria’s most active geological structures. This fault accommodates stress from the ongoing collision between the Adriatic microplate and the European plate, a tectonic process responsible for shaping the Alps.
Although the Alpine mountain‑building phase is largely complete, the region still experiences periodic stress releases, resulting in earthquakes like this one.
The Semmering region has seen several smaller quakes in recent days, including micro‑events in Leoben and Hieflau between 20–23 July. These were too weak to be felt but indicate ongoing tectonic activity.
