Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake at Depth 16 km Strikes Eastern Turkiye on 18th July 2026

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Eastern Türkiye on 18th July 2026, occurring at a depth of 16 km, according to the European‑Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The tremor was recorded at 03:21 UTC, with the epicentre located at 38.247°N, 38.490°E, placing it close to Malatya’s Battalgazi district.

Location & Areas Where Shaking Was Felt

  • 19 km ESE of Malatya, a major urban centre in Eastern Türkiye.
  • 123 km NNW of Şanlıurfa, another large regional city.
  • Felt across Elazığ, Adıyaman, Tunceli, and Şanlıurfa provinces, according to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

Depth & Shaking Characteristics

The earthquake originated at a shallow crustal depth of 15.6–16 km, which typically produces stronger shaking at the surface. USGS classifies magnitude 5.0 earthquakes as moderate, capable of causing damage to poorly constructed buildings and being widely felt across the region.

Damage & Official Statements

Early assessments from AFAD reported no adverse findings and confirmed that field surveys were ongoing. Local authorities noted minor structural impacts, including a partially collapsed wall in Battalgazi, though no major injuries or widespread damage were reported.

Regional Seismic Context

Türkiye sits on several major fault lines and experiences frequent seismic activity. The Eastern Anatolia region is particularly active due to the interaction of the Anatolian, Arabian, and Eurasian plates.
