An oil well fire near Lake Arthur off Louisiana Highway 717, west of Gueydan, that broke out Sunday afternoon is being monitored and burned out.
Colonel Kirk J. Frith of the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office said the immediate danger is over.
Deputies with the sheriff’s office said they received a report of a fire around 3:45 p.m. on Sunday. Authorities said the suspected cause is a lightning storm that moved through the area.
Residents living within a square mile radius of the well were evacuated.
