Two people have died and 17 others have been injured after a building collapsed in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

Israel’s national rescue service said a 35-year-old man was among those who died.

Colonel Golan Vach, from the Home Front Command, said seven people were believed to be trapped in the rubble at different locations.

Describing the scene as  “very complicated”, he said rescue efforts could be ongoing for several days.

The Command has sent about 150 members of its search-and-rescue team to the scene.

Eli Bin, the head of Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency medical service told Israeli media: “It is a very tough arena for rescue, it is really life threatening.

“We are very worried if we will succeed in reaching those same people whose voices we can definitely hear.”

The Israeli military has dispatched search and rescue forces to assist the emergency services.

A fire official, Lior Teherani, told Channel 10 TV that it began when an underground multi-level car park which was under construction collapsed.

That movement caused a crane to fall down, taking more of the building with it.

A construction worker, Micha, said he was in the garage underground when he began to feel vibrations.

“All of a sudden everything collapsed,” he told Channel 10 TV.

“It was scary. You feel like everything is going to collapse, and you are going with it.”

Despite being blown backwards by the blast, he suffered only light injuries.

An investigation into the precise cause of the collapse has begun.

It happened on a site in Ramat Hachayal, a commercial area in northern Tel Aviv comprising high-tech businesses, restaurants and a hospital.
