South Africa experienced widespread snowfall today across several high‑lying regions, with multiple provinces reporting significant accumulations and wintry conditions. The cold front moving across the country brought snow to areas that regularly see winter events, as well as a few locations where snowfall is less common.
Light snowfall and sleet were observed in parts of Johannesburg this morning. Several suburbs reported brief periods of snow as cold air settled over Gauteng, marking one of the more notable winter moments for the city in recent years.
The towns of Rhodes and Matatiele, located near the border of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu‑Natal, recorded heavy snowfall throughout the day. These regions often experience winter snow, but today’s event brought widespread coverage and travel disruption across mountain passes and rural routes.
Wintry conditions were reported in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State. Light snow and sleet fell across elevated terrain, contributing to icy conditions and reduced visibility in parts of the park.
Snow also fell across sections of the Mountain Zebra National Park and the Renosterberg region between Middelburg and Graaff‑Reinet. These high‑altitude areas frequently experience winter snowfall, and today’s event added fresh accumulation across ridges and open plains.
The town of Nieu‑Bethesda in the Sneeuberg mountains recorded snowfall beginning around 19:45 last night, continuing into the early hours of this morning. The area is known for its cold winter climate, and today’s snowfall added to the ongoing wintry conditions across the Eastern Cape interior.
Forecasters expect additional snowfall in Johannesburg and other parts of Gauteng tomorrow as the cold front continues to move northwards. Residents should prepare for low temperatures and possible disruptions.
