Fish Kill Alert

A few months ago, the appearance of several dead striped catfish in some rivers in the Magdalena basin set off alarms and caught the attention of authorities, environmentalists and scientists. For a time, large specimens of the species appeared floating in some points of the Cauca and Nechí rivers, with a yellow pigmentation on the back, however, the reason for the deaths remained a mystery, so several investigations were immediately promoted .

Last Saturday, inhabitants of the La Isla sector, in commune eight of Villavicencio, got up with similar news. Thousands of fish appeared dead along the Ocoa River, one of the main tributaries of the municipality. Unlike the situation in the Cauca River, this case seems to have a clear cause: the dumping of highly polluting substances on the tributary.

“The number of fish found is impossible to quantify,” Environment Secretary Sara María Cabrera, who appeared in the situation, said on Monday. “Highly resistant aquatic species, commonly known as the eel, the quiver, the cuchas, the chubanos and the sleepers, which usually survive in the mud, appeared dead. So powerful will have been what they poured ”, explained spokesmen of the same entity.
