Tornado Hampton 02.06.12

The National Weather Service (NWS) says an EF-1 tornado with winds up to 90 miles per hour touched down on the city’s southeast side Saturday night, causing damage to homes and knocking out power to thousands.

The tornado and strong winds left a trail of extensive damage behind as storms moved through the area around 9 p.m. Saturday evening. No injuries have been reported.

Dan McCarthy, a meteorologist with the NWS, told RTV6’s Eric Cox Sunday morning that after looking at some of the buckling of the roofs on homes that were damaged, it’s possibly caused by the way that tornadoes “spin up.”

There were reports of trees and power lines down, as well as damaged homes and garages. Two homes on Pommel Court that the NWS was looking at Sunday morning sustained significant damage, but no one was in either home at the time. One of the homes was deemed a total loss, where a dog was in the home Saturday night, but a neighbor’s son rushed in and took the dog out as the storms hit.

Authorities said there was one report of a car landing on top of another near South Hawthorne Avenue.

Indianapolis Power & Light Company reported more than 6,000 customers lost power during Saturday’s storms. Most of those have been restored, but a few hundred remain in the dark.

To the north in Fishers, crews were called to a house fire on Geist Ridge Drive around 6 p.m. It took more than 30 firefighters with multiple agencies to get the fire under control.

Authorities said initial reports indicate a lightning strike is to blame for the blaze. No injuries were reported in the fire

The storms also caused flash flooding, especially to the northeast of the metro area.

A woman and two toddlers had to be rescued from a vehicle in Anderson after their car stalled during an attempt to drive through high water.

No one was hurt, but authorities said the incident should serve as a reminder to never drive through standing water.
