Tornado, With Damage, In Western Minnesota, USA

Tornado Hampton 02.06.12

The National Weather Service said Monday afternoon it has received a report of a tornado sighting in western Minnesota.

Meteorologist Lisa Schmit said a tornado was spotted in Yellow Medicine County and two reports of damage have come in from law enforcement officers working southeast of St. Leo.

Schmit said she had few details but was told it was structural damage, with no people injured.

St. Leo is about three hours west of Minneapolis.

Meanwhile, counties adjacent Yellow Medicine in Minnesota and South Dakota were under a blizzard warning.

A spring snowstorm in the Upper Midwest shut down schools and government offices, canceled flights and closed main roads and interstates Monday, while making life miserable for cattle ranchers in the midst of calving season.

The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings for much of the Dakotas and part of Minnesota, with the storm expected to linger through Monday night in some areas. Eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota could see the most snow, up to 20 inches.

Winds gusting in excess of 40 mph blew the snow around and reduced visibility for motorists.
